The story then cuts to Maya, the girlfriend, whom Jake introduces as the top student in Vaughn’s class. She has scored highest again, and she says the professor praises her. Next, a line repeats the promise that he will be back. While the couple studies, Maya says they will do this together and he does not need anyone’s special favors, which lands harder than she realizes. On a study break the professor’s line about another way to earn that grade plays again in his head. Maya asks where he went, and he says nowhere. His narration closes on how perfect the woman in front of him is and where his thoughts are instead.

A loyal, brilliant girlfriend is set against a professor who has fixed on him in the premise, and a single wrong step can cost him the scholarship, the relationship or both.
