She says he watched her for the whole class instead of the board, and tells him to stay behind. Does he understand? “Yes, Professor,” he replies, and that phrase is about to run the series. Her session after class is brief. She tells him to focus, then breaks it off and dismisses him. He hangs around, and she asks whether he is still staring rather than leaving. The retake is tomorrow with the rest of the class, she says, but if he wants a private lesson, it is 9:00 tonight, just the two of them. That offer closes the episode.

Episode 2: reading aloud at nine

He turns up late, and she points it out. She seats him and makes him read a line aloud, “For thou art my friend,” then orders him to look at her and keep looking. Every time he replies with her title, she approves: apparently he can follow instructions. She asks what has been distracting him and whether it still is. Next comes the confession that gives the story its risk: her husband believes she is grading papers, and if he found out she was here with a student, she would lose everything. The real lesson begins now, she says, and there is one thing she wants to hear. The episode closes on the question of what he says, and the single answer the rule permits.
